Focus on the little things to make your goals feel easy
Mar 27, 2023A client was checking in with me the other day and reflecting on all of the differences she’s felt since we started working together. With bright eyes and a big smile, she said things like “I’m not bloated anymore,” “My stomach feels flatter in the mornings and ready for food,” “I have more energy,” “I was able to manage my period symptoms this month whereas in the past it would have completely knocked me down.”
Of course, my eyes lit up and I ended up having an even bigger smile on my face than she did.
But what really got to me was when she said how doable it all was, and dare I say… easy.
When we started working together, she was already in the gym 6 days per week, sometimes twice per day, and counting her macros very strictly. To most people, she was the definition of committed and knowing what she was doing. Yet she was still feeling bloated, struggling with hormonal symptoms, and not seeing the changes she was aiming for.
With a big picture view, I could see that there was an opportunity to maximize her time spent on reaching her goals with a few minor tweaks to what she was already doing.
So what we did was make one small change after another week after week. We did things like sub in a homemade protein shake for a store-bought one, add protein to her breakfast bowl, switch up her split at the gym, incorporate active recovery days, and BOOM… her whole life started to change! We eventually hit a point where she found her groove and her goals changed from food and exercise focused to working more on connection to herself and her body through things like practicing self-compassion, slowing down, and celebrating her efforts.
I’ve experienced this myself, but to hear it from my clients puts me on another level of high that I can’t describe. I absolutely LOVE when people get to feel the effects of what life is like on the other side of the confusion and mental and emotional blocks that have been keeping them stuck. It’s like a rebirth into the world and this time, you’re living in your purpose as who you came here to be.
But let’s come back to that word - easy.
This stuff gets to be easy should you choose for it to be. You can’t climb a mountain in one giant step. What you can do is focus on each step you take in getting to the top. And that’s exactly what this health journey is like, too.
Little things add up to big things.
Life happens in the smallest moments. It’s in the actions that we take from moment to moment that add up over time and turn into who we are, what we do, and how we live. It’s the little things that add up to these big results.
This is true for every area of life - health, career, relationships, both our inner and outer worlds. The key is biting off only what we can chew in the moment. Each moment looks different, so on the days where your energy is low and you’re giving it all you’ve got, remember that’s still 100% of what’s in your tank at that moment in time.
In terms of health, sometimes that’s hitting a PR at the gym and other times it’s doing a restorative stretch in your pajamas on the bedroom floor.
Sometimes it’s meal prepping for the entire week and other times it’s throwing your meal prep out because grandma brought over your favorite garlicky baked clam dip recipe that you just can’t get enough of (that is a very specific example for a reason 😋).
Sometimes it’s getting up an hour early to fit in your workout and other times it’s hitting snooze because you were up until midnight trying to make that deadline at work, so you’re skipping the gym today.
Are you following me here?
The point I’m trying to make is that the way we take care of ourselves looks different from day to day, and moment to moment. It’s all connected and it all matters. I’m not saying use this as an excuse to never exercise or cook for yourself. But give yourself a break from time to time if life feels too chaotic or something pops up unexpectedly.
Focus on what’s filling you in the present moment, and be intentional with your choices. If it’s truly nourishing a part of you then you can bet that it will contribute to your general health.
Remember, these small actions add up over time. So stay consistent and you will see progress.
If you’re doing all the things and still struggling to see or feel results, book a free call with me here so we can connect and talk about what you’re struggling with.
Sending you love,
Carissa
