4 tips to stay consistent with your health while traveling
May 09, 2023I just got back from 11 days of being away. It was a wholesome trip packed with fun and adventure, meeting up with friends, beaches, museums, parks, hiking, biking, dancing, and whole lot of eating!
I used to get super stressed about going away. I was always afraid of gaining weight and feeling super inflamed. And I usually ended up manifesting both, but to no surprise. My habits and lifestyle have completely shifted in the past couple of years.
Now when I travel, I enjoy bringing some of my favorite routines with me because they have become integrated into who I am as a person, rather than items to check off a list because I "should" be doing them. Not only does this impact how I feel when I return home, it also impacts the whole trip because I find myself feeling better and having more energy to keep up with everything going on.
It's a real game changer!
So here are my top tips for keeping up with your health while traveling:
- Stick to some kind of routine. For me, my morning routine is a non-negotiable. I stock up on things I'd normally eat for breakfast and get up early to enjoy some peace and quiet to set my day up for success. What part of your regular routine is a non negotiable for you?
- Plan active days. Whether that's walking around instead of taking public transport, exploring new parks, finding a hike nearby, renting bicycles, kayaking, etc. - you can do these things on your own or look for a tour that features something you love!
- Look for gyms or classes to sign up for. For me, I love finding a dance studio wherever I go. I took a hip-hop class and a yoga class on this last trip - they were so much fun and a great way to meet people in the area, too! I also always choose a hotel or AirBnb with a gym in case I have some down time for a more structured workout. (Proud to say I made it there twice last week:) ) Maybe you love your cycle or barre class - is there a place you can get to at least once while you're away?
- Food shop. Have your go-to things around to munch on. For me, I stick to my regularly scheduled breakfast, and I enjoy having either lunch or dinner in my AirBnb's, too. This leaves room for one meal out per day. That’s what works best for me. Maybe it's just snacks for you. Great! The point is having something to lean on to keep you consistent.
Doing these things also impacts overall enjoyment of the trip, too. I get to meet people who live in the area which is a great way for the inside scoop on local recommendations. I’m also saving money by cooking some meals for myself. And like I mentioned earlier, my energy is high because I’m still prioritizing things that light me up! So I’m in a better mood and feel like I could keep going, rather than those end of a long day blues, or sleeping in and wasting the day because I’m feeling sluggish.
No matter what you do while you’re traveling, remember that connecting with others and immersing yourself in new experiences is just as important for your overall health and wellness as the food and exercise. Keep in mind that you’re still doing something for yourself every day by engaging in these really cool life-experiences. Enjoy each and every moment!
